- checking smell, colour and structure to assess the conservation
For defects are given demerit marks. Furthermore it is assessed the dry matter contents by wring test and the level of soiling.
DLG-Key for assessing the fermentation quality of forage silages
Fermentation quality is assessed by content of butanoic acid, acetic acid and pH value. Depending of the contents there are given points and these points lead to a score for the fermentation quality.

Roughage feed report Baden-Wuerttemberg
The report is based on a database established by the LAZBW. It is a tool for target-oriented advisory service on-site with regard to quality of roughage feed. The data interpretation results from growth, physical region, harvest technique, silo system and silage additives. The uniform collection of data via given masks is made by advisory services, institutes for animal feed analysis and agricultural agencies. Around 2.700 samples were collected in 2008.
