Under the Northern Ireland Nitrates Action Programme, intensive livestock farms with manure N loadings exceeding 170 kg N/ha/year have to apply for a derogation to operate within a manure N loading limit of 250 kg N/ha/year. To prevent P from manure sources building up in soils and resulting in leaching and surface runoff losses of P into ground and surface waters, farmers operating under a derogation must ensure that their farm P surplus does not exceed 10 kg P/ha/year.
