In collaboration with the institute of NABU (German Society for Nature Conservation) the LAZBW developed a catalogue with indicator species which should be representative for Southern Germany. 28 herbs were chosen to define species-rich grassland. To receive allowance a farmer has to cross a plot by the line transect method. He has to divide the path theoretically into three parts and if he finds at least four indicator species in each part, the plot is regarded as eligible.
