Farmers visiting Derval
Founded in 1973, the experimental station of Derval belongs to the Chambre départementale d’agriculture of Loire-Atlantique. Focus lies on research, extension and education in the field of milking, forage production and environmental issues with the objective to improve the social and environmental sustainability of dairy farms.
Core research themes are nitrogen losses at farm scale, phosphorus runoff, pest management and reduction of energy consumption. Derval’s station is also renowned for milking research. Equipped with automatic milking since 2008, research is led on compatibility with grazing, and also on milk quality and work organization.
For extension and education, Derval station’s objective is to produce useful, usable and used references for dairy farmers and their advisors. Results are communicated via trainings, publications, open door days, public opening, etc.
