The Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research (ILVO) is a scientific institute belonging to the Policy Domain ‘Agriculture & Fisheries’ of the Flemish Government. It performs and coordinates policy-supporting scientific research and the associated public service in view of a sustainable agriculture and fishery.

ILVO builds up knowledge necessary for the improvement of products and production methods, for safeguarding the quality and safety of products and for improvement of the policy instruments as a basis for the development of the sector and the agricultural policy of the countryside.

The Social Sciences unit has to present and clarify the social choices concerning a sustainable and competitive agriculture. The research activities take place in close cooperation with policy makers. Extensive experience has been build up on indicator development and monitoring of farm sustainability regarding economic, ecological and social aspects.

The Social Sciences Unit of the Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research will coordinate the contributions of Flanders and take part in all the actions of all the WP 1 and 2.
