Total Confinement Dairy system (TCD)

To compare a Total Confinement Dairy system (TCD) against a Conventional Winter Calving (CWC) and a Low Input Spring Grazing systems (LISG) in order to determine the impact of zero grazing on soil quality, nutrient loss and gaseous emissions.

Conventional grazing systems can have a detrimental impact on soil quality, nutrient (P) loss and gaseous (N) emissions from grassland. Under total confinement dairy systems, these problems ought to be reduced or eliminated. It is expected that the present research will show that compared with grazing systems total confinement systems give rise to environmental benefits including decreased poaching, decreased soil compaction and erosion, and decreased nutrient loss in runoff and in gaseous emissions.
